Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch got frank over the two marquee teams he wants to see his squad beat over the course of this season, naming the last two teams to become NBA champions.
“When the reigning NBA Champion is in your conference and you play them multiple times, it’s important to focus on those games. Try to measure yourself against the best. Then you have long-standing traditional powers like Golden State, it’s a team we always want to get up to play. Our challenge is to be up and ready to play every single night, we haven’t been the best at that over the last year. Our consistency needs to be better.”
The Wolves are coming off a first-round exit at the hands of the Nuggets, who went on to beat the Suns, Lakers, and Heat to life the NBA Championship this summer, their first in franchise history.
The Warriors haven’t faced the modern-day Wolves in the playoffs and are 18-18 in their last 36 contests. Given their status with Stephen Curry and the four rings the core of Draymond Green and Klay Thompson have won alongside Curry is irreplaceable.
The Wolves Match Up Well With Both Teams
If there’s one team in the NBA that could have the recipe behind beating the Nuggets, I would be frank in naming them. One of the teams I’d put atop that list is the Wolves because of their incredible size. With a season of continuity and Karl-Anthony Towns finally being healthy, the Wolves will hope their starting power forward also embraces a more team-friendly role where he prioritizes defense.
From a roster-building perspective, the team has some holes to fill. Regardless, I personally think the team is pretty good and has all the pieces a playoff team needs. They have a deep guard rotation led by a veteran, a twin-tower combo where one is offense-first and the other patrols defensively. The Warriors would punish the size of the team, as they are a more select and chosen unit with years of stability carrying them to where they are today. The Wolves would absolutely punish the Warriors in the paint or on the glass with their size advantage, especially if the Warriors run out a lineup with Klay Thompson as the power forward.
The Wolves have proven they are playing with aggression to be successful this season. Hopefully, the Wolves can go toward the top of their Conference instead of stagnating. Beating the Nuggets and Warriors would be a big achievement, but there are a lot more opponents. in that mix of the various contending teams in the West.
