• Jason Kidd revealed to Fadeaway World the severity of Kyrie Irving’s ongoing injury

• Irving played just 13 minutes in his preseason opener for the Mavericks in the 2023 Abu Dhabi Games and was held out of the second game

• Kidd confirmed the benching was a precautionary measure

Kyrie Irving was ruled out of the Mavericks’ second preseason game against the Timberwolves as part of the 2023 Abu Dhabi Games. Coach Jason Kidd revealed to Fadeaway World why Irving was being held out.

“We’re not worried about it. It’s a precaution. This is a long journey, a long marathon, we want to make sure he’s ready to go when we have our next opportunity to play.”

The Mavericks announced prior to the start of the second game that Irving was ruled out with left groin soreness. That was unfortunate as the Mavericks lost a second consecutive game to the Wolves in Abu Dhabi, with tonight’s game being a 10-point loss for Dallas.

The team left for Madrid shortly after the end of the second game. They’re preparing for a game against Luka Doncic‘s childhood club Real Madrid in what will be an incredible homecoming for Doncic.

Kyrie Irving’s Concerning Injury Patterns

As Irving has aged, he’s become a lot more prone to injury. He hasn’t played 70 games in a season since 2016/17, right after winning the first and so far, only, championship of his career. He played just 60 games over his stints on the Nets and Mavericks last season. If he even wants to be considered for All-NBA, Irving will not only need to help Doncic lead the Mavericks to a strong record but also play at least 65 games to be eligible.

Irving played just 29 games in the 2012/22 season, but the reason behind that wasn’t injury as much as it was Kyrie’s refusal to get vaccinated. The two seasons prior to that in Brooklyn were wrought with injury for Kyrie, who played a total of 74 games out of a total of 154 played over that time.

His only two seasons on the Celtics saw him have a better availability rate than Boston, but not one that would be ideal to most fans. He played 127 games over a sample size of 164 available games.

Since his departure from the Cavaliers, Irving has suffered a number of minor injuries on different parts of his body. This includes his shoulders, knees, calves, and feet, just to name a few. With a groin injury sidelining him from this game, there will be high hopes that this is just a minor issue and we can see him play in sunny Madrid in front of one of the most passionate European fanbases.

Irving averaged 27.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 5.5 assists last season.
