The Philadelphia 76ers have been one of the contenders for an NBA title for the last few seasons, primarily because Joel Embiid is an MVP-caliber player in the NBA. Unfortunately, he rarely stays elite through a playoff series, being the only MVP to have never advanced to the Conference Finals.

Embiid averaged 33.1 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 4.2 assists last season and was named league MVP. Unfortunately, he had the largest point-per-game drop for any MVP in history as the 76ers were eliminated by the Boston Celtics yet again in the second round.
With people concerned about Embiid’s long-term future in Philadelphia, these comments will make it clear to the organization that Embiid will not tolerate playing for a losing project.

Embiid made some pretty big statements on media day. It started with him openly saying he doesn’t think the Celtics and Bucks had surpassed the 76ers, despite them adding All-Star guards and the 76ers trying desperately to hold onto their point guard. Nonetheless, Embiid said the 76ers always have a chance to win as long as he’s on the roster.

His comment about the team not coming closer to winning a championship should worry Daryl Morey. Morey may have managed to keep James Harden under his thumb, but that won’t work with an MVP in his prime like Embiid. If Embiid wants out, the 76ers will eventually have to acquiesce.
The 76ers aren’t closer to a title this season, possibly having taken a step back with the Harden drama and the improvements made by the Bucks and Celtics. Embiid may not be happy about Harden’s trade request but understands why it took place. He may find himself in the same position soon if the 76ers cannot be competitive this season.
