• Chris Paul shared his true thoughts on possibly being a Sixth Man in Golden State this season
• Paul explained he came off the bench in the 2008 Olympics and is motivated to help teams win
• It’s unclear whether Paul will start alongside Stephen Curry in the backcourt or come off the bench as the sixth man
The Golden State Warriors have swung for the fences this offseason by adding an old Chris Paul to their roster in exchange for young microwave scorer Jordan Poole. Paul adds maturity and stability to Golden State but likely will need to come off the bench to add balance to the Warriors lineup, something the legendary point guard seems open to.
“I actually got the opportunity in ‘08 to come off the bench for the Olympic team. Anybody who knows me knows I’m all about winning. Whatever I can do to help our team win.”

Paul didn’t directly say he’d be okay coming off the bench for Golden State but definitely heavily implied it. Coming off the bench in the Olympics is not the same as coming off the bench on an NBA roster.
Paul has a lot of respect around the league, but it may be best for him to accept a bench role this season instead of forcing either Kevon Looney or Andrew Wiggins to move to the bench. He averaged 13.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 8.9 assists last season for the Phoenix Suns.
Steve Kerr Hasn’t Clearly Answered This Question Yet
Steve Kerr hasn’t been able to provide any clarity on this situation either. The Warriors head coach is waiting to see how training camp plays out before making a major decision on what the team’s starting lineup will be. Instead of discussing who the sixth man is, Kerr complimented all the players and said the Warriors have six starters on the roster.
“We basically have six starters, the way I look at it, and only five can go each night. So, I haven’t decided yet what we’re gonna do, I wanna see training camp. We’re gonna try different combinations and take a look, but obviously, all six guys are gonna play a lot of minutes for us.”
Kerr also mentions that people will have to accept roles in order to help Golden State win.
Playing Paul at point guard and moving the rest of the lineup down a position could create a fun small-ball lineup with Draymond Green as the center, but it can’t be their primary plan. Paul should be the one to keep the bench in shape. His presence will greatly boost the development of young players like Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody as well.
