• LeBron floated the idea of retirement after getting swept in the Western Conference Finals last season
LeBron James may be considering stepping away from the game at the end of the 2023/24 season. James is entering the 21st season of his career and has already defied expectations for a player at his age. He expressed a desire to retire after losing in the Western Conference Finals last season, a thought that he may carry forward this season.
“I don’t know. I don’t know. I can’t (expand on that) because I don’t know. I’m happy right now, I’m excited. Looking forward to tomorrow and getting the training camp going. I don’t know what the end of this road looks like or at the end of the season. I have no idea.”

LeBron averaged 28.9 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 6.8 assists last season, so it’s clear he hasn’t lost a step on the court. He recovered from a foot injury this summer, healing up a torn tendon that he played through to help the Lakers make a playoff push. With health on his side and a loaded roster, LeBron will be excited to get on the court.
LeBron James Explained Why He Came Back For Year 21
As we discussed, LeBron had expressed thoughts of retirement after the 2023 Playoffs but chose not to follow through on it. He made the announcement that he’s coming back this year at the ESPYs but has elaborated on the decision at media day. He said the progress the Lakers made under coach Darvin Ham and GM Rob Pelinka encouraged him to stay with the franchise.
“The job that Coach Ham and Rob did, that inspired me. We got a really good team and did a great job in the summer.”

LeBron is possibly hoping he can protect his health throughout the season by playing a secondary role during the regular season behind Anthony Davis. James has called Davis the face of the Lakers, with AD’s health finally putting him in a position where could play 82 games in the season.
With James motivated and Davis healthy, the Lakers will look to return to the championship mountaintop they’ve chased since their 2020 title win.
