Warriors champion Draymond Green was taken aback after reading a controversial post by a fan this week. In a short statement, the X.com user tried to explain why Draymond shouldn’t pander to LeBron James and his ‘Klutch Sports’ agency group because they are supposed to be enemies who actively work against each other.

“Klutch sees Steph as the enemy, they should see him as a great to uplift LeBron,” wrote Richard Goodman. “This is why I don’t like Green playing both sides, it doesn’t feel right, I get it it’s business. Bird and Magic was smarter than this they joined each other to uplift their greatness they never tore each other down.”

Magic Johnson and Larry Bird were bitter rivals back in the day, but their relationship was very complicated and it started long before they joined the NBA. In the case of Steph and LeBron, the mere notion that the two are enemies or that you can’t support both at the same time was enough to elicit a direct response from Draymond for the whole world to see.

“Imagine overvaluing your opinion so much, that you get this caught up in two men lives. Starts using the word “Enemy” to describe two black heroes, and then proceed to falsely accuse another black man of playing both sides. Both sides of what to be exact? A pointless debate?”

As two icons of the sport, LeBron and Steph are always going to be compared to each other but fans can often take the debates too far. Draymond, as a member of the “new media,” has made it his mission to snuff narratives such as these.

“Or… The simple appreciation of others’ greatness? I am super confused on what sides it is that you speak of,” Green continued in a follow-up comment. “Lastly, I don’t play anything but basketball. You don’t make it this far in life “playing”… with the exception being playing basketball for me. Good luck with the debate.”

The Real Nature Of LeBron And Steph’s Relationship

To the outside observer, it may be hard to imagine LeBron James and Stephen Curry peacefully co-existing in the league together but they’ve done that and more.

Despite multiple matchups in the NBA Finals, (which the Warriors won three out of four times), LeBron and Curry share a deep level of mutual respect and admiration for each other.

Just this past summer, when the Lakers and Warriors met in the Conference Semi-Finals, LeBron and Curry were singing praises about each other and how long they’ve come since their first showdown in 2015.

Are Hardcore Rivalries Dead In The NBA?

Of course, the love between James and Curry may just be the product of the modern NBA era. Back in the days of Magic and Bird, rivalries are what helped keep the league going and they consistently attracted viewers to the games.

Whether it was Magic and Bird, Jordan and Isiah Thomas, or even Wilt and Bill Russell, we saw countless “hardcore” rivalries over the years between guys who couldn’t stand each other.

Today, that sort of thing is pretty rare. Aside from a few exceptions, most players are pretty cordial with their opponents and even befriending the competition has become completely normalized.

So for any fans hoping to see players feed into the endless debates and rivalries, you shouldn’t hold your breath. For Draymond and plenty of other players, it’s much better to appreciate each player for what he is instead of tearing one down to uplift another.
