• Mychal Thompson shared his thoughts on the Lakers and Warriors next season
• Thompson expects both teams to be in the mix for a top-five seed
• The No. 1 pick from the 1978 Draft is Warriors’ legend Klay Thompson’s father who also works for the Lakers
The Lakers and Warriors will come into next season with tall expectations. Mychal Thompson spoke with Mark Medina of Sportskeeda, who asked for his take on the Lakers and Warriors in the 2023-24 season. Thompson didn’t mince his emotions about both franchises, admitting both teams should be in the top five alongside the Nuggets and Suns.
Medina: Where do the Lakers and Warriors fit in the West?
Thompson: “Somewhere in the top five. Right now, you have to respect the defending champions. My top five in the West are Denver, Phoenix, Warriors, and Lakers… Who am I missing?”
Both teams were outside the top five last season, with the Warriors finishing sixth and the Lakers finishing seventh. Both teams beat higher-seeded first-round opponents before matching up in the second round, where the Lakers emerged victorious in the 4-2 series win.
The Top Of The Western Conference Is Impossible To Predict
The Western Conference was a dogfight the entirety of last season, as teams were battling for seeds until the final week of the season. To make an assumption based on roster strength could be foolhardy, as injuries are likely going to play a huge role in helping one team stay in front of the other.
The Nuggets, Suns, and Lakers should be top-three locks if they can enjoy even relatively decent health. The Warriors have taken a risk by integrating Chris Paul into the lineup, so it’s hard to say how that’ll work. The Grizzlies would be in the mix but are without star player Ja Morant for the first 25 games of the season.
The Clippers still have a solid roster even without acquiring James Harden, but their health is the most unpredictable. They could be a top-three seed or as low as the play-in. The Kings should hold steady from last season as well.
The Mavericks, Timberwolves, Pelicans, and Thunder will be aiming for the top six seeds but will need to capitalize on every opportunity. We are in for a terrific season in the West once again, as all teams will scratch and claw over each other to be in the playoffs.
