In today’s NBA, consuming cannabis or other related products is no longer as taboo as it once was. In fact, thanks to advocates like Kevin Durant and J.R. Smith, the practice has been largely normalized in today’s NBA world. Even still, those who smoke a little too much may be subject to face extreme consequences by their team.
In the case of Mark Cuban, he admitted to trading players who took their love for getting high a little too far. “It’s a team. No lie, I’ve traded guys because they smoke too much,” said Cuban on the Pat Bev podcast. “If you got some young dudes on there that are just figuring it out, smoke some, but don’t know what the team culture is and you got one dude that’s just, you know, if you walk down the hall of the hotel and you know he’s on that floor no doubt about it.”
Cannabis can be great for some in moderate doses, but it’s a drug that’s easy to abuse given its reality mild side effects. In the locker room, overconsumption of the drug can inhibit certain activities on the court. At the very least, it serves as a potential distraction for the team, whose entire focus should be on winning games.
“All of a sudden these other kids pick up on it and you see them red-eyed coming to practice all of a sudden. You don’t want them going down that road. Everybody smokes right, it’s not about that. But there’s smoking, there’s how powerful the sh*t you’re doing is, and then there’s how much you do,” said Cuban. “If you get past that level where you gotta look at the bigger picture, that’s just not the culture…”

Locker room culture is an important thing to maintain for any title contender, and many things can jeopardize the stability of a team. And for the Mavericks specifically, they are in no position right now to risk poisoning the locker room.
Can Cuban Keep Things Together In Dallas?
We know from Cuban’s own testimony that he’s working hard to build a dynasty from the ground up centered around Luka Doncic and while he’s had some success in this mission, the Mavericks have yet to complete the job.
In their first run together last season, Luka and Irving failed to even qualify for the play-in tournament and there isn’t much hope they can do much better going forward.
The biggest question mark for them surrounds Kyrie Irving, who is about as unpredictable as they come. Moreso than smoking or really anything else, Irving’s tendency to jump ship and abandon his post is what really makes him the biggest potential culture-killer of them all.
The hope for Cuban is that Kyrie can stay in line long enough to win the title, but it’s only a matter of time before someone, or something, leads the Mavericks to their eventual downfall.
