  • The NBA has had many iconic duos over the years
  • Fans were asked which is the greatest duo in the history of the league
  • One duo emerged as the top pick among fans

In 77 seasons, the NBA has seen some truly special duos step foot on the court. Picking the greatest duo from that lot can be a bit of a difficult task, but that is what NBA fans were recently asked to do.

A fan joked that Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant would dominate even when they bickered, “Shaq and Kobe would dominate teams while arguing with each other, is this even a question.”

One went the Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, “The one with 6 rings.”

The iconic Lakers duo of Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar are the greatest by a fair bit for one fan, “Magic and Kareem. Not even close.”

Another went with Kobe and Shaq and they don’t believe it’s even worth debating, “Kobe and Shaq… duh it’s not even a debate”

“As a duo, it’s got to be Wade and James.”

O’Neal and Bryant were a very common pick for the fans here, while no one really went with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. Let’s take a look at how much success the duos mentioned here had on the court.

Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen: 6x NBA championships, 6x Finals appearances

Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: 5x NBA championships, 8x Finals appearances

Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson: 4x NBA championships, 6x Finals appearances

Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal: 3x NBA championships, 4x Finals appearances

LeBron James and Dwyane Wade: 2x NBA championships, 4x Finals appearances

If we just go by rings, then it has to be Jordan and Pippen. They three-peated twice, from 1991 to 1993 and then from 1996 to 1998, a very special accomplishment.

We ranked the top 10 best duos in NBA history previously, with the two Chicago Bulls icons coming out on top there.

There’s another way to look at this, though, and that’s taking into account how great they were as players. In that case, Magic-Kareem and Kobe-Shaq would really be the ones fighting for the top spot.

All four are generally considered among the top 10 greatest players of all time. If I had to give the edge to one duo over the other, I’d go with Kobe-Shaq, even though they didn’t win as much, and might not be considered greater than those two as players.

Shaq called his run with Kobe the most dominant one-two punch ever created, and it probably was. Had the two of them stayed together for as long as Kareem and Magic did, they’d likely have won just as much.
