• Lou Williams has said the Sixth Man of the Year award should represent one of the three players that popularized the role

• Trae Young had advocated for the award to be named after Williams

• Williams claims it could be anyone between him, Manu Ginobili, or Jamal Crawford

Lou Williams, Jamal Crawford, and Manu Ginobili are three of the greatest sixth men in NBA history. After Trae Young claimed that the Sixth Man of the Year award should be renamed for Williams. Williams was asked the same but suggested it be either him, Jamal Crawford, or Manu Ginobili.

“That would be an honor. If not me, Jamal [Crawford]. If not Jamal, Manu [Ginóbili]. I think we’re three guys that champion that. We made it a lifestyle. I think we’ve changed the way people view it. We changed the way the players view it, most importantly.”

The sixth man often gets put into a thankless role, as they don’t get the limelight but are also often criticized for the slightest of struggles. Despite that, these three players took pride in the role and dominated.

The award is named after John Havlicek right now, but a renaming to recognize the modern greats in that role may be necessary. What Williams, Crawford, and Ginobili did in that role is almost impossible to replicate.

The Greatest Sixth Men In League History

Lou Williams retired from the NBA very recently but established his name as one of the greatest bench scorers the game has seen. He averaged 13.9 points and 3.4 assists over his career and won three 6MOTY awards. He was arguably the best player on the Clippers in 2018-19 and led them into the playoffs despite coming off the bench.

Jamal Crawford was also hooping as a sixth man for the Clippers, averaging 14.6 points and 3.4 assists over his career. The microwave scorer picked up three awards over his career.

Manu Ginobili may just be the most versatile sixth man ever, mixing his scoring skills with deft playmaking as well. He became a three-time All-Star despite him coming off the bench for most of his career and averaged 13.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game.

Manu only won one 6MOTY award but is put in the same group as Crawford and Williams of the greatest bench players in league history.
