- Chet Holmgren doesn’t want to compare Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Kobe Bryant
- Holmgren believes all three have done a lot for the game
- He thinks it diminishes the respect that they should be getting when they get compared
Ask an NBA fan to name the best players in the league over the last 30 years and three names will almost certainly be mentioned, Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Kobe Bryant.
The three greats always get compared to each other as debates rage on about who was better. Oklahoma City Thunder big man Chet Holmgren was recently asked during an appearance on the All The Smoke podcast to rank those three and he didn’t want to do it.
“1A, 1B, 1C,” Holmgren said. “What does the comparison do?… Each of them did so much for the game, I feel like it kind of just diminishes the respect that we should be giving to them.”

That’s a pretty fair response to that question. They were all amazing in their own right and accomplished some truly special feats during their time in the league. Instead of constantly comparing them, you should ideally be appreciating the fact that you got to see them in action. It’s why I often say, whether you like him or not, appreciate LeBron while he’s still playing.
Tyronn Lue Also Didn’t Rank These Three
There are few men in NBA history who might be better qualified to rank these three than Tyronn Lue. He was LeBron’s head coach from 2016 to 2019, played with Kobe for three seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers from 1998 to 2001, and then with Jordan from 2001 to 2003 on the Washington Wizards.
Lue also was on this podcast recently and was asked the very same question. He hilariously refused to give an answer as he wanted to stay out of that business and that was smart on his part. These comparisons won’t ever go away though, just like the GOAT debate is one that will never end.
