The Philadelphia 76ers seem to be spiraling out of control this offseason, with the team going through some major upheaval this summer. James Harden requested a trade while Joel Embiid said he wouldn’t mind leaving, worrying fans and executives of the franchise.

76ers GM Daryl Morey discussed the situations his team is in, answering various media questions. One very revealing answer came when Morey described the challenge of building a team around players with the archetype of Embiid and Harden.

“I think James is a little bit hard to play with at times. I think Joel is a little bit hard to play with at times. Both these guys are such dominant forces that they can be challenging for guys to play off of.”

Fans have known about the challenges of playing with either Embiid or Harden, given their play-styles, but it’s odd to see the GM of the team openly discuss it as a negative. At least he clarified that the team is looking for wings in a Harden trade, the right move on paper, but there may not be a high-level wing made available for Harden.

The 2018 MVP averaged 21.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 10.7 assists with the 76ers last year and is currently trying to force his way to the Clippers.

Will James Harden Get His Way?

The Clippers do not have the players that the 76ers would want for their win-now situation. They can send multiple wings to the 76ers like Norman Powell, Marcus Morris Sr., or even Robert Covington, but none of these options can be considered elite for the role. No matter what you say about Harden, he is still an elite point guard.

Unless the Clippers offer up Paul George, it doesn’t look like the 76ers will make their acquisition of Harden easy. It may fall down on the player to continue agitating for a move and pulling out the same bag of tricks we saw in Houston and Brooklyn when Harden didn’t get his way initially. In both situations, he did ultimately get traded, which might just be the outcome here as well.
