NBA players can often find their fortunes changed in the span of a night. After being drafted into the NBA, a player that came from humble beginnings instantly becomes a wealthy person. And being so young, some players don’t handle the access to money so well, as Jalen Rose once revealed in an interview.
During a 2021 interview with CNBC, Jalen Rose spoke about his first few years in the NBA, saying that he didn’t save or spend his money well. Noting that he earned $2.2 million from his rookie contract, he revealed that he once spent $15,000 on a phone that he never even ended up using.
“Your first contract, you spend it all. Almost everyone spends it all… I paid $15,000 for a phone that I never used. That’s a dumb purchase.”
Rose clearly was able to get some better advice, as he was able to mature and make sure that he wasn’t spending his money as recklessly as he would during his early years. On top of that, he was able to find some success after his playing career, so he should have taken care of that money much better than he did early in his career.
Jalen Rose Found Success After His Playing Career
Rose was able to become a solid player during his career in the NBA, especially while playing for the Indiana Pacers. While Rose’s days as a star were definitely when he was part of the Fab Five at the University of Michigan, there was no denying that he was an important part of the Pacers team that became a solid contender in the East.
During his time in the NBA, when Rose wasn’t putting up solid numbers for the Pacers, he was leaving fans in splits with some hilarious quotes. When talking about arriving in his hometown of Detroit late at night, he had this iconic statement ready to fire.
After his playing career, Rose found success as an analyst for ESPN, with a long stint that lasted till 2023, when he was let go. As things stand, Rose’s former colleague Kendrick Perkins is tipped to replace him on NBA Today on ESPN.
