Jordan Poole was a key contributor when the Golden State Warriors won their fourth championship in eight seasons last year. At the time, it would have seemed rather improbable that just a year later, he’d be shipped out of town.
A lot has been said about why the Warriors felt the need to make the trade, from veterans having issues with him to head coach Steve Kerr being fed up with the youngster. Team insider Jason Dumas has now revealed another headache concerning Poole that the Warriors were dealing with
“The punch was kind of like the cherry on top, but there was some festering way before that during the season that had nothing to do with the punch,” Dumas said on The Morning Roast. “He just wanted more playing time. He wanted to start, he wanted a role. Whether you think this is fair or not, he wanted to get treated like Steph (Curry), Klay (Thompson), and Dray (Draymond Green) and he noticed that, in his opinion, wasn’t equal treatment, (he) didn’t appreciate it.”
(starts at 3:50 mark):
Having played that significant role in winning a title, perhaps it isn’t all that surprising that Poole felt he deserved to be treated like a star on the team. He was never going to get the same treatment as Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green though, as they had just done so much more for the Warriors than him.
He had also gotten that taste of consistently starting games in the 2021-22 season and once some players get that, they don’t want to let it go. Not getting a bigger role this past season just doesn’t seem to have sat all that well with him. Considering all that we have heard about this situation over the last week or so, it certainly isn’t a surprise that the Warriors decided to trade him.
Jordan Poole Is Going To Get All That He Wants On The Wizards
Dumas noted that Poole was quite upbeat when talking about being traded during his press conference and you can certainly see why. With the Washington Wizards, he is going to get both the things that Dumas mentioned he was unhappy about with the Warriors.
Poole is going to be one of the stars on the team along with Kyle Kuzma and will be treated like one. With Bradley Beal and Kristaps Porzingis having departed, the two of them will also be featured on offense and will put up big numbers.
Poole had averaged 20.4 PPG, 2.7 RPG, 4.5 APG, 0.8 SPG, and 0.3 BPG last season and you’d expect his numbers to go up across the board in 2023-24.
