The hype for Victor Wembanyama coming into the NBA was unlike anything we have seen before. Not since LeBron James has a prospect generated this much buzz for their first game.

Fans packed the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas for their first look at Wembanyama in a San Antonio Spurs jersey. But things didn’t go as fans expected them to for Wemby.

During his NBA Summer League debut in Las Vegas, Victor Wembanyama had a less-than-stellar debut. In fact, he had quite a few blush-worthy moments during the game. The first came when Wembanyama missed an easy bucket from right underneath the rim.

After that, Wembanyama would end up getting dunked on by Kai Jones. Very few expected Wembanyama, already one of the tallest players in the league, to get posterized, let alone for that to happen in his very first game for the Spurs.

Then came another flub, as Wemby seemingly lost confidence in his shot, as he missed a relatively easy three-point shot, missing the rim entirely.

And finally, Wembanyama would end up getting crossed up by fellow rookie and the second overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft Brandon Miller.

For Wembanyama, this was a night to remember but also a night to forget. No NBA player will ever forget their first game, even at Summer League. But the poor moments for him will be something he will look to put in his rear-view mirror.

Can Victor Wembanyama Make An Impact At NBA Summer League?

Victor Wembanyama had a poor night, getting 9 points, 8 rebounds, 5 blocks, and 3 assists. Wemby shot just 2/13 from the field, not what he or anyone in the NBA world expected from him.

NBA fans reacted to Wembanyama’s performance in his first NBA Summer League game, with some even calling him a bust. That is a massive overreaction, as this was just his first game, but he will have to perform better going into the rest of the Summer League.

Wembanyama spoke after the game, saying that he didn’t realize much of what was going on and that he needs to improve. The Summer League is a good opportunity for players to get their first experience of playing in the NBA, and learn how to get things going. So Wemby could use this poor first night to adjust his game.
