The Houston Rockets have big plans for the 2023 NBA offseason, as they’re ready to go back to contention after appointing Ime Udoka as their new head coach.
The Texan team has been linked with over 10 players in the past couple of days, and Fred VanVleet appears to be winning the race to join the two-time NBA champions. According to Michael Grange of SportsNet, the Rockets are getting ready to offer $40 million per season to VanVleet.
“One league source told me the Rockets, armed with $60 million in cap room and no state tax in Texas, are going to tempt VanVleet with a two-year deal for $80 million adding veteran stability to a roster teeming with talented players on rookie contracts. … ‘Everyone outside the [Raptors] seem to say Fred VanVleet is leaving,’ said one league source. ‘But if you’re an agent, that’s what you want everyone to say.'”
The Rockets are ready to make a splash this offseason and land veterans that can help both Udoka and the rest of the team reach new heights. Houston is a very attractive destination for many around the league given their cap space. Still, they are interested in a certain type of player and won’t hesitate to make a big offer to lure them to Toyota Center.
VanVleet didn’t have the best 2022-23 season with the Raptors, posting discreet numbers, 19.3 points, 7.2 assists and 4.1 rebounds in 69 games. The ball is on the Rockets’ court now, as they have more options to bolster their ranks and compete for more than a play-in tournament spot next season.
Fred VanVleet Is A Man In Demand This Offseason
As great as this sounds for the guard, the Rockets won’t be the only team that can lure him this offseason. The Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Lakers, and even the San Antonio Spurs were mentioned as potential landing spots for the former Toronto Raptor.
VanVleet won’t miss suitors this offseason, and things can get very interesting for him once free agency opens this Friday.
