Kristaps Porzingis Could Still Become A Free Agent And Break Potential Trade To Celtics

Kristaps Porzingis can still opt out of his $36 million player option for next season by midnight, ruining ongoing trade plans to send him to the Celtics.

A pretty stunning Draft day trade could be in the works, as the Boston Celtics, Washington Wizards, and LA Clippers are figuring out a three-way trade that sends Kristaps Porzingis to Boston, Malcolm Brogdon to LA, and Marcus Morris with a first-round pick to the Wizards.

Adrian Wojnarowski has revealed that the trade is contingent on Porzingis opting into his contract before midnight tonight, to else he becomes a free agent and needs to be given a new contract before he can be traded. This could end up blocking the rumored trade.

“They have until midnight for Kristaps Porzingis to meet his deadline on his $36 million option. Either he opts in and then he goes to Boston potentially, or he could opt out and become a free agent.”

Porzingis is an interesting fit in Boston, coming off one of the healthiest seasons of his career, where he averaged 23.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 2.7 assists in 65 games played. He would add another layer of versatility to the Celtics’ offense and could be a defensive terror with Robert Williams next to him.

Will This Trade Fall Apart?

Nothing is a done deal in the NBA until we see contracts or trade agreements signed by all parties. Just hearing about the possible trade brewing could entice other teams into convincing KP to become a free agent and be on the open market before leaving in the final year of his contract. Kristaps is in a position to secure a long-term contract if he enters free agency this season, as compared to taking a risk and seeing his value plummet with one bad season in Boston.

A starting lineup of Marcus Smart, Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, Kristaps Porzingis, and Robert Williams would easily rank as the strongest in the entire NBA. The Celtics will feel the pressure to get this deal done, but the ball is completely in Porzingis’ court until he makes a decision.
