The Phoenix Suns have shaken up the balance of power in the Western Conference again. After trading for Kevin Durant in February and taking two games off eventual champions Denver Nuggets, they aggressively acquired Bradley Beal to build a star-studded roster.
Devin Booker has been in Phoenix for years and is now getting star players to join him. He and Beal have familiarity with being in a backcourt together, doing so in a Rico Hines run from a few years ago.

We saw flashes of Booker playing the point guard role for the Suns whenever Chris Paul was out of the lineup, so there is a small sample size to show it can be effective. With a microwave scorer like Beal next to him, the Suns’ backcourt is going to be a bolt of offensive lightning, flanked by Kevin Durant on the wing.
Some Defensive Reinforcements Needed
There is no doubt that this lineup will be spectacular offensively with Booker, Beal, and Durant. You don’t need a traditional floor-setter and all three players will share ball-handling responsibilities for most of the game. This means Deandre Ayton will be the odd man out and need to be moved for some defensive players immediately.
The Suns cannot afford to pay four players max contracts, so they’re likely to use Ayton in a trade to add depth in a two-for-one deal. The returning assets have to be defense-focused, and the Suns need to use whatever money they are allowed to in the summer to get off-ball rotational pieces.
The Suns have a $5 million trade exception, but no players on their existing roster they can attach it to for a trade. The Suns will be the league’s most fascinating team to watch in the offseason, as they can build a fearsome rotation depending on which players are willing to take discounts to win a title.
