The New Orleans Pelicans went 42-40 during the 2022-23 regular season, and there’s no doubt that this was a disappointing outcome for the franchise, which was expected to be a playoff team in the Western Conference, given the talent currently present on the roster.
It seems as though, as a result of this season, the franchise is considering making some changes. Previously, it was reported that the team would be willing to trade up in the 2023 NBA Draft to draft point guard Scoot Henderson. The latest report from NBA insider Marc Stein has revealed that the team would prefer to trade Zion Williamson in that scenario rather than Brandon Ingram.
“I heard this week from one well-placed observer who is convinced that the Pelicans would indeed consider dealing Williamson away if it meant they could draft Henderson, pointing to a rising level of exasperation within the organization regarding Williamson’s ongoing availability issues and overall approach. My read, at this juncture, is that the Pelicans are less inclined to consider trading Brandon Ingram in the same scenario.”
It is easy to see why the New Orleans Pelicans would consider trading Zion Williamson right now. He is averaging 28.5 games a season since entering the NBA, and despite his talent, his availability is a major concern for the team.
When he plays, though, Zion Williamson is an All-NBA player on the court. He averaged 26.0 PPG, 7.0 RPG, and 4.6 APG for the Pelicans in 29 games this season, and his ability is worth taking a risk on for any team.
The Houston Rockets Could Try To Trade For Zion Williamson
Even though the New Orleans Pelicans’ primary goal is to acquire Scoot Henderson, it is quite possible that they will go in a different direction. In fact, the Houston Rockets are a team that has also been linked with Zion Williamson.
“The Rockets hold the No. 4 pick in the draft, are already one of the youngest teams in the league, and are potentially interested in moving the pick for a win-now player (or players). In my conversations, the name Zion Williamson has come up as a potential trade target for Houston.”
