After another collapse in the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals, the Celtics are under fire, especially Tatum and Brown. According to Golden State Warriors legend Rick Barry, they suffer from the ‘Russell Westbrook syndrome.’
“Both (Jaylen) Brown and (Jayson) Tatum, who are two talented players, suffer from what I call (Russell) Westbrook syndrome,” Barry told Sports Illustrated‘s Eric Jay Santos.
Barry explains that Westbrook always brings competitiveness and intensity to the court, but they try to be heroes most of the time, and when that happens, nothing good comes out of it.
“Westbrook is an incredible talent. I love how hard he plays, but he tries to force things. In the game of basketball, you should always be taking what the defense gives you… Both Jaylen and Jayson, they have a tendency to force things and end up getting a lot of turnovers.”
These two were expected to compete for championships for many years, but so far, they’ve only been to the Finals once, losing to the Warriors in 2022. This season, they failed to get past the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals, missing a big chance to challenge for the title.
Tatum and Brown remain a solid duo in the league, but they’re under scrutiny for their performances in recent years. The clock is ticking for them, and the Celtics are well aware of that.
Last season, Tatum became the first Celtic ever to average 30 points per game. He posted 8.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists in the best season of his career.
