Robert Horry relived the time Kobe Bryant smacked Samaki Walker in jest during the latter’s time with the Los Angeles Lakers.
“Samaki made a bet with Kobe, and all pay up immediately,” Horry narrated on All The Smoke. “Samaki didn’t pay because he was new to the team. And so Samaki didn’t pay him, and Kobe kept asking. One day, two days, two weeks later, he was like, ‘You don’t give me my money, I’mma smack you upside the head.'”
“So as Kobe was walking past him on the bus, He’s like, ‘Samaki, you have my money?’ and ‘Nah, m***********, I ain’t got your money’, and boom! Kobe smacked the s**t out of him!”
Trust Kobe to not miss a beat, or in this case, a bet. The Black Mamba lived up to his word every bit, and Walker was at the receiving end for not ponying up.
On his part, it was a baffled Walker who recollected the incident and shared his side of the story in an interview in 2016 via The New York Post.
“I told him, ‘Man, I don’t have no $100 on me right now. First of all, why are you coming at me for $100?’ With that being said, I put my earphones back on, and once I put my earphones back on, the most amazing thing happened. Kobe, he sucker-punched me,” Walker said.
All that for Walker missing a half-court shot.
Samaki Walker Still Doesn’t Get Why Kobe Bryant Caught Him To Pay Up
In the same interview, Walker remarked that he had no idea to date as to why Kobe picked him over the rest of the others who failed to drain the half-court shot.
“Kobe comes to me on the bus, asking me where his $100 is, believe it or not. Out of all the people, he chose me, which is still to this day puzzling,” Walker said.
Going by Horry’s story, it was clear that the rest paid up, and Kobe wasn’t going to let Walker get away with not giving him his $100. Sometimes, it’s incidents like these that bond teammates better, and if it meant one of them getting flush smacked in the head, then that’s to that.
