LeBron James’ potential retirement this summer has been the biggest talk in the NBA community. So much so that it has overshadowed the Denver Nuggets weeping the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Finals.

NBA analyst Charles Barkley was apparently furious with the media for ignoring Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets’ accomplishments. He revealed that he was so mad that he turned off his television in the morning.

“I was so mad this morning I actually turned the TV off,” Barkley said. “Because the Denver Nuggets sweep, get to the Finals for the first time. … We all love LeBron. He didn’t say he was retiring yet, but when he does, we’ll do all that stuff. It should have been all about the Denver Nuggets, and Joker, Jamal Murray, Michael Porter, and those guys. It was awesome. When they were getting stomped last night and came back and won, that was impressive. That should have been what we talked about all day.”

Barkley is absolutely correct about the Denver Nuggets getting ignored by the media despite reaching the first NBA Finals in franchise history.

But at the same time, LeBron James is still the face of the NBA. If a player of his caliber even hints at hanging up his sneakers, it is bound to grab the attention of the entire world.

The Denver Nuggets Are Used To Lack Of Attention From The Media

Being a mid-market team, the Denver Nuggets aren’t usually talked about a lot by NBA media. Usually, that wouldn’t be an issue. But they clinched the NBA Finals, and it is a big deal.

Fortunately, it doesn’t bother the team. Nikola Jokic earlier stated that it was normal for the Nuggets to get ignored by the media.

“It’s nothing new for us. To be honest, I like it. We don’t care. Whatever. Even in the bubble when we beat Utah, it was they blew the lead. When we beat the Clippers, it was they blew the lead. Nobody talked about how we won those games. It’s normal for us. I don’t pay attention [to all of that].”

Jamal Murray echoed a similar statement about the team. At the end of the day, whether the Nuggets are talked about in the media or not, they are just four wins away from winning the 2023 NBA Championship.

That’s undoubtedly worth more than any other team getting favored by the media throughout the season.
