LeBron James had to deal with two big blows on the same day. The obvious one is his loss in Game 4 to the Nuggets and elimination from the Western Conference Finals, but the other was the retirement of Carmelo Anthony.
Anthony and James have been close friends since they started their careers together in high school. Anthony and James were both drafted in the 2003 Draft as well, leaving LeBron as the sole player from that draft still active in the NBA. He reacted to his friend’s retirement by revealing he already knew it was happening.
“I kind of knew the announcement was going to happen cause I shot the video a week ago. So people will probably think I’m lying about that too. They shot the video a week ago so I knew the announcement was coming, just not which day. It happened today. It’s bittersweet, obviously.”

LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony will always be linked in NBA history for their shared stories. Obviously, their success in the league ended up being very different, as James went on to establish himself as one of the greatest ever while Anthony failed to ever win a championship. But ‘Melo is one of the greatest scorers this game has seen, and now we will have to wait for LeBron to retire.
The End Of An Era Approaches
With Anthony retiring, it’s only a matter of time before everyone is on retirement watch for LeBron. He’s bound to play the next season and is aiming to play in the 2024-25 season alongside or against Bronny James, so we can still expect two more seasons from this generation’s defining player.
LeBron briefly indicated that he’s thinking of the end of his career now after losing to the Nuggets, a concerning thought for the millions of fans that still regularly keep up with what he’s doing in the game. It’s not easy for someone to keep going with the miles James has.
He’s the last player left in the league from the 2003 Draft Class. Even the 2004 Draft class won’t have a player in the league after Andre Iguodala’s possible retirement and Dwight Howard looking to form a Taiwanese superteam.
All good things must come to an end, unfortunately.
