Lakers Should Rest Their Starters Against The Warriors In Game 5, Says ESPN Analyst

ESPN's Mike Greenberg believed that the Lakers should rest their big names ahead of the all-important Game 5 for both teams.

ESPN analyst Mike Greenberg had another hot take earlier this week saying the Los Angeles Lakers should rest their starters in Game 5 of the second round of the Western Conference playoffs against the Golden State Warriors.

“Here’s my suggestion: LeBron needs to slip a nice, comfy robe over that pair of slippers and get set to watch Game 5 tomorrow night from the comfort of his mansion in LA,” Greenberg said on Get Up. “He shouldn’t even go to San Francisco. … I’m going down with this ship on this theory.”

He further added: “The Lakers have no chance of winning Game 5 of this series,” Greenberg said. “The Warriors are going to be playing for their dynasty at home with the crowd. They’re going to win. Don’t waste any of LeBron’s or AD’s energy on this game.

“You only need to win one more game. I’m being somewhat facetious when I say don’t even bring them. But what I am saying is I would be very judicious about how much I use LeBron and AD in Game 5, understanding that my best chance to close out this series is at home in Game 6.”

The Lakers’ 104-101 win in Game 4 on Monday saw them go up 3-1 in the series, making it the second time that the Warriors trailed by that number. They bounced back from that deficit against the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2016.

Coming back to Greenberg’s words, the hot take surely makes for an amusing one. With LA getting a chance to potentially close out the series in the next game, there is no chance of either James or Davis sitting this contest out.

Will A Series Win Against the Warriors Make The Lakers Title Favorites?

The Lakers have been at their best defensively throughout their postseason run thus far, and that will be the key for them to win the title should they vault the Warriors’ challenge.

Beating Golden State automatically makes the Lakers favorites to clinch the title, but they will have to be on top of their game from the offense’s viewpoint. Their opponents — either the Phoenix Suns or the Denver Nuggets are powerhouses on that front and will pose a stern challenge.

The Lakers have the necessary firepower to put away the Warriors, and only time will tell if that happens in Game 5.
