Coming into the 2023 playoffs, many fans were not sure what to make of the Phoenix Suns. While they are stacked with high-end talent that includes Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Chris Paul, they lack a certain amount of depth that most championship teams contain.

Yet, despite the doubts, the Suns are two wins away from the Conference Finals, and Devin Booker has made it his personal mission to carry them there every step of the way. To put it bluntly, he’s been on fire this postseason and it’s gotten the attention of NBA analyst Stephen A. Smith, who compared him to the legendary Kobe Bryant.

“I’ve been thinking about Kobe Bryant a lot lately. And you know what they say the greatest accomplishment in the world is imitation. And when I look at this brother Devin Booker, that is what I think about so much so that I’ve coined a new nickname for Devin Booker: it’s the light-skinned Mamba. That’s right, that’s what I’m calling him because he’s that kind of dude. It’s appropriate to have the conversation about how gifted and great this brother is, what he brings to the table…”

Devin Booker is reminding me A LOT of Kobe Bryant…which is why I will now be calling him The Light-Skin Mamba.

With Booker, it’s not just that he’s lighting the league on fire; it’s how he’s doing it that is most impressive. With Chris Paul out, he’s been able to play point for the Suns while dropping buckets at a historic pace from mid-range.

He’s a lot like Kobe in a lot of ways, in both play style and competitive mentality. But to really live up to the Mamba name, Book is going to have to deliver in this postseason and finally prove that he can lead the Suns to a championship after getting so close a few years ago.

Can The Suns Win The 2023 NBA Championship?

Never before have we seen a team go on to win a title after acquiring a star like Kevin Durant mid-way through the season. The truth is, it usually takes time to incorporate such a massively important player, and the Suns are essentially having to battle out there without having the time to finalize their rotations.

Of course, Booker’s offensively explosion has given the Suns a chance anyway, but we are seeing some of the side effects that mid-season trade had on team chemistry. Even with all the talent on the team, this will not be an easy run and the Suns cannot afford to take any team lightly.
