Paul George learned what it meant to be a mentor and an off-the-floor influence from former Miami Heat legend, Dwyane Wade.
Speaking on his latest episode of Podcast P, “I learned a lot from just matching up against D-Wade,” George said.
“What I take away from him is his mentorship and the off-the-court superstar that he was. A lot of people don’t know, but D-Wade’s got his hands in a lot of s***. And he’s such a down-to-earth, humble dude. In my early years in the league, I wanted my career to be like D-Wade did.”
The LA Clippers star’s thoughts come on the back of the Heat superstar becoming a Hall of Famer. The Chicago native has been one of the greatest guards to take the floor. His decorated career sees him as a 3-time champion.
He was also a 13-time NBA All-Star and was named to 8 All-NBA teams during his career. He led the league in scoring in 2009 and made the All-Defensive Second Team thrice.
Safe to say, George has found the perfect role model to shape his career on and off the court. What remains to be seen though is if he can end his career just as illustrious as Wade’s.
Paul George Injury Update: Will The LA Clippers Star Play In The First Round Of The Playoffs?
The Clippers are all set to face the Phoenix Suns in the first round of the playoffs, and they will be without the services of George, who sustained a knee injury last month.
Per The Athletic’s Shams Charania, George is not expected to be ready for the start of this series in Phoenix, but he has made some progress since suffering the injury.
The guard had a mixed response about his injury on his podcast. “I’ve been feeling better. I’ve been working my butt off, grinding literally every day, “ George opined. “Six days out of the week I’m training, doing rehab. I’m gonna give it every chance I got, man. It’s coming down to the wire.”
The Clippers will now rely heavily on Kawhi Leonard and Russell Westbrook to match up against the formidable Suns. If they indeed get the better of Phoenix, then expect George to take the court in the second round.
