Stephen Curry is the heart and soul of the Golden State Warriors. He has been fulfilling that role for more than a decade now. Curry has always been in the spotlight when donning the Warriors jersey, but that changed briefly when Kevin Durant joined the team.

When Kevin Durant signed with the Warriors, Stephen Curry had to take the back seat and let KD in the spotlight. Curry’s longtime team Andre Iguodala opened up about the sacrifices Steph made for Durant in an episode of the ‘Club Shay Shay’ podcast.

“I’m talking about stats-wise, numbers-wise, attempts-wise,” Iguodala said. “Steph was the one that sacrificed the most. How many more threes would he have if KD didn’t come along? No one talks about he never complained. Never had an issue. Never talked about his brand. His brand possibly could have taken a hit. He wasn’t quite selling as many shoes. He just kept it all in stride because he just knew the bigger picture, man. When you win, everything else is going to come how it’s supposed to come.”

Curry has always been one of the most selfless superstars in the league. When Durant joined the team, Curry could have easily established that the Warriors were his team. Instead, he welcomed Durant with open arms.

They won two NBA Finals in three years. In the first two finals, they beat LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, then they lost against the Toronto Raptors because Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson were injured in the 2019 NBA Finals. Let’s not forget Kevin Durant won two Finals MVPs, and Stephen Curry was really happy because of that, showing his humility and confirming that the team’s success is more important than the players’.

Stephen Curry’s Key Welcome Message To Kevin Durant

Being a leader of a team in the NBA is not all about scoring huge numbers on the court. Sometimes it’s about taking the back seat to another superstar and making sure that the said superstar feels welcome to the team.

In a one-on-one interview with the Warriors general manager Bob Myers, Curry’s amazing message to Durant when he first joined the Warriors was revealed.

“The line I remember was, ‘Whether you’re MVP or I’m MVP. If it’s yours I’ll be sitting there in the front row for congratulating you.’ I had this moment like wow that could actually happen. Kevin could have been MVP,” Myers said.

The message simply meant Curry was ready to make all the sacrifices in the world to make sure Durant felt comfortable with the Warriors.

It panned out just like that as Curry and KD helped the Warriors win two NBA titles in three trips to the NBA Finals. Had there been any conflict between them, this wouldn’t have been possible.
