Magic Johnson has announced very bad news to the NBA world, as the Los Angeles Lakers suffered a big loss.

Johnson took to social media to share the news that his father has sadly passed away. Magic shared a series of pics on Twitter, along with two big messages for his dad.

“Thank you, Dad. I love you forever! ❤️ ️,” he wrote on Twitter.

Johnson included a heartfelt message to pay homage to his pops, calling him his idol, hero, biggest supporter and friend among other things.

“I’m truly heartbroken. Last night I lost my biggest supporter, my best friend, my hero, my idol, my father, Earvin Johnson Sr. Since I was a little boy, I wanted to be just like my dad. My father was the hardest-working man I’ve ever known. He worked 2-3 jobs at any given time to provide for his family and never made excuses. I appreciate him so much for instilling that trait in me and teaching me the importance of education, having an impeccable work ethic, respecting myself and others, how to dress, how to be a man, having integrity and so much more. I never had to look outside of my home for an example, he was the best role model I ever had. He was the first person who told me if I put my time in, worked hard, and did what I was supposed to do, I would make it to the NBA. It was all of those times he beat me up during our one-on-one games that made me a better basketball player and made me mentally and physically tough.”

There’s no doubt that Magic’s father played a big role in the player’s life and career. He was always there for Johnson, supporting him and pushing him to reach the next level. It seems like they were very close until Mr. Johnson’s last day on earth, and Magic surely treasures those moments.

Magic Johnson Sends Heartfelt Message After His Father Passed

Magic talked about the sacrifices his father made to put food on the table, give him an education and mentor him for life.

“My father utilized real life experiences to teach me how to be a man of character and integrity. One day a gang chased me and my brother Larry home. We came in and slammed the door, waking my father up from his nap. We told him the boys were chasing us home and we were thrilled when he said, ‘come on, let’s go!’ because we knew he was going to protect us. We stepped outside and before we realized, he slammed and locked the door behind us. He told us not to come back until we stood up for ourselves. Since then, I’ve never stop fighting for myself, my family, and my community.”

“My dad was a man of principle. He used to have a trash hauling truck and would take me with him to pick up trash in our community. One day, I left some trash on the ground because it was so cold outside. I ran back into the truck to get warm versus doing the job thoroughly. He pulled me out of the truck, walked me back to the trash site and told me that if I did this job halfway, I would do everything in life halfway; then he made me pick up the remaining trash. That was the day I became a perfectionist, who is driven by excellence and best in class. Dad, thank you. For every lesson you taught me, every time you supported me, and for being the best father, man and example a son could ever have. Everything I’ve done in life is because I wanted to make you proud. From basketball to business to being a husband, father and grandfather, who I am and what I am is because of Earvin Johnson Sr. What a tremendous honor it is to be named Earvin Johnson Jr. I love you forever!”

Magic learned a lot from his father, as he never abandoned his kids, and he can’t feel prouder about them now that they’re grown and doing big stuff with their lives. It looks like he had a great example to learn from, and Johnson never took it for granted.

We hope Magic is doing well in this hard time, and our prayers go to him and his family.
