The Atlanta Hawks have reportedly signed a 5-year contract with former Utah Jazz head coach Quin Snyder to be the head coach of the Hawks with immediate effect.
Snyder replaces outgoing coach Nate McMillan, who led the Hawks to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021. His relationship with Trae Young allegedly broke down and poor results on the court led to his firing.
Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN confirmed that Snyder has signed the 5-year contract to take over the team with immediate effect and coach against the Washington Wizards on Tuesday.

Snyder had been one of the best coaches in the NBA over the last half a decade for his overachievement with the Utah Jazz. However, he left the Jazz after the 2022 playoffs to take some time away from the sport. This led to Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert being traded away, Now, Snyder gets to coach another ultra-talented duo in Young and Dejounte Murray.
Can The Hawks Save Their Season?
The Atlanta Hawks have been one of the fixtures in the middle of the Eastern Conference, battling to be above .500 and earn a playoff spot. However, it looked like they may actually be in danger of falling with the players, especially Trae Young, not responding to McMillan’s tactics anymore.
Snyder is a veteran and very serious coach, who brings a defensive focus to the team. Given they have the mercurial Trae Young, having a coach that’ll prepare them defensively may be perfect.
This is the third head coach Young has had since 2020, so he needs to find ways to make sure he makes the relationship with Snyder work instead of adding him to the list of fired coaches of the franchise.
