Fans in Dallas had long been clamoring for the team to get another star next to Luka Doncic and the front office finally got them one, when they traded for Kyrie Irving. Making a move for the controversial guard was a big gamble, but it was one the Mavs probably had to make.

It was clear that Doncic alone could only take them so far and getting Kyrie definitely raises their ceiling. They are both also trying to make sure the other is happy, as they hilariously kept passing the ball to each other on the final possession against the Minnesota Timberwolves. It led to the Mavs failing to get a shot off and there will be some growing pains along the way.

Skip Bayless, however, is of the opinion that ultimately, things won’t work between Kyrie and Luka. On the latest episode of Undisputed, the controversial talking head explained why Doncic won’t be happy long-term with Irving.

“He’s (Luka Doncic) not going to be happy with this. I’m on record and I’ll triple down on it now, Luka Doncic will not be happy long-term with Kyrie. They’re too much alike. They need the ball in their hands and they need to shoot the basketball. It’s not like LeBron (James) and AD (Anthony Davis), they were the perfect match because they had Shaq (Shaquille O’Neal) and Kobe (Bryant) potential. You have the guard and you have the center and the guard can feed the center and he can pick-and-roll with the center.”

“In this case, they can both assist the basketball but Luka is turning into more of the pure point guard and Kyrie is now the designated shooter for this team.”

Sure, the fit isn’t perfect like the LeBron James and Anthony Davis duo for example as Skip says here. Still, it is doubtful that Luka would have much of a problem with Kyrie taking a lot of that scoring load off him. Head coach Jason Kidd had stated numerous times this season that they need to reduce Luka’s usage rate so that he doesn’t burn out and Kyrie will help with that. Doncic had also stated that he is okay with having to adjust in terms of playing off the ball more, as ultimately, what he cares about is winning.

Kevin Garnett Thinks That The Mavericks Have The Best Duo In The West

The NBA is a star-driven league at the end of the day and the more of them you have on your team, the better your chances of winning. It is why the Mavs made this move and Kevin Garnett thinks they now have the best duo in the Western Conference with Luka and Kyrie.

They definitely are in the conversation, but there is quite a bit of competition for that title, especially after Kevin Durant joined forces with Devin Booker on the Phoenix Suns. It is set up to be a very interesting postseason in the West.
