Derrick Rose is nearing the end of his career, and the last couple of seasons haven’t been all that great for him. He is one of the NBA’s great ‘what ifs’, winning an MVP at a very young age but then losing his prime to injuries. Rose is revered by many NBA fans, especially those who saw how good he was before his problems began, and his talent is something people talk about to this day.
Even as a rookie, Derrick Rose was fearless, he averaged over 16 points per game to go along with nearly 7 assists. And even when he got into the playoffs with Chicago Bulls, when he was going up against the defending champion Boston Celtics with their Big 3, Rose didn’t back down. He got even better. And his amazing performances at the time left an impression on the more experienced superstars playing against him.
Derrick Rose’s 2009 Playoff Performance Drew Huge Praise From Kevin Garnett And Paul Pierce
Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce do a show together where they discuss the NBA. They talk about the league and which teams are doing well, but they also reminisce about the stories from their glory days. And they recently had a lovely conversation about facing Derrick Rose in 2009.
Paul Pierce: “Rookie Rose too. He was a problem.”
Kevin Garnett: “He was a problem day one man. The one thing that stood out about D Rose right away, was although he was quiet, man he spoke the language. He was built for it. He was built for ther position, he was built for the moment, he was built to have the goal on his back like that. Like, it did not shock me when he became MVP. It didn’t shock me.
“But I remember that series was, fun to watch… I was watching our guys just fight. That was a dog fight. D Rose actually thought, ‘Man I can beat these guys by myself.’ D Rose, I knew right away he was going to be something special.”
Paul Pierce: “I ain’t never seena point guard that athletic though. When he did, one of them game, he did the dunk on the breakaway. He rocked it and cradled it and then dunked it. I was like, ‘Whoa, point guards is doing that now?”
The Chicago Bulls took the Boston Celtics to 7 games in that series during the 2008-09 season. And even though they didn’t win, Rose’s performance which saw him put up 20 points and over 6 rebounds and 6 assists per game, announced to the NBA world that he was going to be a player no one had ever seen before.
