James Harden proved he is one of the greatest scorers of this generation during his prime with the Houston Rockets, where Harden collected 3 consecutive scoring titles and even won MVP. However, the Rockets’ championship window clearly passed them by and they moved Harden to the Brooklyn Nets for future assets, which they’ve used to build a nice young core at the moment.
Harden would force his way to the Philadelphia 76ers from the Nets and signed a discounted contract extension this offseason to go all-out and compete with the team. However, he can opt out and re-enter free agency next season, where Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Harden is angling to return to the Rockets.
Naturally, Harden was asked about this after the 76ers Christmas Day win over the Knicks. He wasn’t happy that reporters asked him about this before they even wished him Merry Christmas.
James Harden on Rockets reunion rumors:
“Why would you ask me about that on Christmas, man?… You didn’t say Merry Christmas or nothing. You asked me about something that I ain’t even… I’m not answering. I didn’t see nothing.”

While Harden didn’t deny the report, it’s fair for him to be upset about such a question. Harden switching teams has been a sensitive topic and it might raise uproar if he returns to the Rockets two-and-a-half years after forcing his way out of the team.
Could James Harden Actually Return To Houston?
Objectively speaking, Harden had the most stability in his career when he was with the Rockets. He became one of the best in the league and possibly could have won a title if the superteam Golden State Warriors didn’t exist.
If Philly fails for another season, Harden could bet on the youth in Houston and be the experienced vet looking to make them champions, similar to what Chris Paul did with the Suns when he joined in 2020.
If the Rockets get a generational prospect like Victor Wembanyama to go with their current young stash of players, Harden would be the cherry on top. The Rockets have struggled with a sure-fire point guard that can set the table for everyone, with Kevin Porter Jr. trying to fill that role. Harden is proving in Philly that he might be the best playmaker in the league and if he returns to Houston, will have some of the most potent young offensive talents in the league to feed and help make it better.
