2000 USA Dream Team: Where Are They Now?

As usual, the 2000 U.S. Men’s National Basketball team featured some of the best talents the NBA had to offer. Led by Head Coach Rudy Tomjanovich, the U.S. won gold for the 12th time in 14 years. The team played a total of 8 games in the Olympic Games and went a perfect 8-0 over that span. The first 5 games of the tournament were relatively easy for them as they only recorded one single-digit win and 3 wins by 30 points or more. This included a 12-point victory over France, which they would again see later in the tournament.

The only true scare for the U.S during the 2000 Olympics was their semi-final matchup with Lithuania. The team squeaked past with an 85-83 victory where team leaders Kevin Garnett and Vince Carter stepped up and took control late in the contest. They would go on to defeat France for the 2nd time in the tournament to win the gold medal. The members of this team gave us some of the best memories throughout this tournament and their NBA careers. The question we answer today is, where are they now?

Steve Smith (Analyst)

2000 Olympic Stats: 6.4 PPG, 2.4 RPG, 1.4 APG, 0.3 SPG, 0.4 BPG

During his post-basketball career, Steve Smith has become one of the most respected analysts in the game. He has taken color commentary jobs with his alma mater Michigan State and his former pro team, the Atlanta Hawks, for regular-season and playoff games. He was also a regular on NBA TV’s “Open Court” alongside other great NBA legends and hosted by TNT’s Ernie Johnson. He holds commentary jobs with Big Ten Network and NBA TV, as well as being a trustee for the Naismith Basketball Hall Of Fame.

Smith returned to Michigan State after his career was over and earned his degree. He was also honored as the university’s commencement speaker for their 2022 undergraduate ceremony. Smith also has dove into them the philanthropic side of things as well. He founded the Steve Smith Charitable Fund, which gives support to those who attended Pershing High School in Detroit and are looking to further their education post-high school at Michigan State, just like Smith did himself. Smith now lives in Atlanta with his wife and two sons.

Tim Hardaway (Business Owner, Scout)

2000 Olympic Stats: 5.5 PPG, 1.4 RPG, 1.5 APG, 0.3 SPG, 0.0 BPG

Tim Hardaway has been busy since he retired from basketball following the 2003-03 season. His son, Tim Jr., was drafted in 2013 by the New York Knicks and later traded to Dallas in the Kristaps Porzingis deal. Tim Sr. has been very vocal in his support of his son’s NBA journey on social media and tv appearances. In 2015, he accepted a job with the Detroit Pistons as an assistant coach, where he would remain until after the 2018 season.

Most recently, Hardaway has ventured into the world of business. He is the owner and President of Banneker Watches and has partnered with CBD companies as well as founded “Dream Dribble”, a product that assists in the art of dribbling for all ages. Most recently, he became a scout for the New York Knicks and has played a large role in their free-agent acquisitions and transactions since 2021.

Shareef-Abdur Rahim (Executive)

2000 Olympic Stats: 6.4 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 0.1 APG, 0.4 SPG, 0.4 BPG

Almost immediately after retiring from the game in 2008 when he was with the Sacramento Kings, Shareef Abdur-Rahim ascended among the coaching and executive ranks rapidly. In 2008 he was named as an assistant coach with the Kings, where he would spend the next 2 years. In 2010 he was named the assistant general manager for the team, but it wouldn’t take long for him to move up from there. Just 3 seasons later, Abdur-Rahim would be named the GM of the Reno Bighorns, the G-League affiliate of the Kings, who have since been relocated and renamed the Stockton Kings.

He then briefly served as the associate VP of basketball operating for the NBA before he took on his greatest challenge yet. In 2018, Abdur-Rahim was named the president of the NBA’s G-League, a position he still holds today. He has been extremely successful in his oversight of the league, as it has never been more popular than it is today. Shareef also started the Future Foundation, which provides after-school outlets for at-risk youth in the Atlanta area. His son Jabri is currently enrolled at the University Of Georgia, where he is headed into his 3rd year with the basketball team.

Antonio McDyess (A Family Man)

2000 Olympic Stats: 7.6 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 0.9 RPG, 0.5 SPG, 0.4 RPG

Tracking down what Antonio McDyess is up to these days is no easy task. The former NBA All-Star has kept out of the spotlight even dating back to his playing days. McDyess has zero presence on social media and has always kept his personal life close to the chest. The only thing known about McDyess’s post-playing days is that he has enjoyed his life as a father to son Atravious and husband to wife Liara. In 2019, McDyess won an auction for a Houston mansion measured at over 10,000 square feet for $3.15 million.

Allan Houston (Executive, Philanthropist)

2000 Olympic Stats: 8.0 PPG, 1.9 RPG, 1.0 APG, 0.0 SPG, 0.3 BPG

Allan Houston is another player that took the coaching/executive route once his playing days were over. Just three years after his retirement, Houston was hired by the Knicks as the Assistant to the President Of Basketball Operations in 2008. Just 2 years later, he would be promoted to Assistant GM of the Knicks. Since Leon Rose was hired as the New General Manager in 2019, Houston has served as a special assistant to the GM while also being the General Manager for the Knicks G-League affiliate, the Westchester Knicks.

Houston is also noted for his philanthropic efforts. He founded the Allan Houston Legacy Foundation, which serves the youth and families in the New York Metropolitan area. Through that foundation, Houston has launched the FISLL project in which Houston speaks on his 5 core values of Faith, Integrity, Sacrifice, Leadership, and Legacy. His program is for youth, coaches, mentors, and leaders. Allan and his wife Tamara now have seven children and reside at two homes in Los Angeles, California, and Long Island, New York.

Vin Baker (Coach)

2000 Olympic Stats: 8.0 PPG, 3.0 RPG, 0.8 APG, 0.3 SPG, 0.0 BPG

The road to where Vin Baker is now was not an easy one. As he has stated many times, Baker battled alcoholism and addiction in his post-playing career. Baker has since overcome those obstacles in a big way and is on to bigger and better things. In 2011, Baker was hired as an assistant basketball coach at a high school in Connecticut. He then turned to former Sonics owner and Starbucks Founder Howard Schultz for an opportunity.

Baker began to work as a barista in a local Starbucks chain in Connecticut, and his goal was to work his way up to manager by the end of his tenure. He did just that in 2015 when he was named manager of the Old Saybrook, Connecticut branch of Starbucks. In 2019, Baker was named an assistant coach for the Milwaukee Bucks, where he won a championship and still holds that position today. Baker has also founded the Vin Baker Foundation to help younger people with their education, personal development, and general well-being. They also host a yearly 5K run that is aimed to raise awareness of the struggles of addiction throughout the country.

Gary Payton (Coach)

2000 Olympic Stats: 5.5 PPG, 2.1 RPG, 3.4 APG, 1.1 SPG, 0.5 BPG

Gary Payton has been a busy man since retiring from basketball in 2007. Most recently, he saw his son, Gary Payton II, win a championship with the Golden State Warriors as a pivotal member of their team. Payton could be seen enjoying every moment as he and his son became just the 3rd father-son duo in NBA history to win championships. Payton goes beyond just the loyalty to his family. Payton is a part of a massive group and movement to bring basketball back to Seattle. Payton has been very vocal about his displeasure with the team’s relocation to Oklahoma City.

He has also tried his hands several times as an analyst with companies such as Fox Sports and TNT. In 2021, Payton was named the inaugural Men’s Basketball Coach of Lincoln University in his hometown of Oakland, California. This is the first time that Lincoln has included any type of athletics in its 101-year history as a university. When asked why he took the role, he simply stated that “it is the least I can do for a hometown that has done so much for me”.

Ray Allen (Coach, Restauranteur, Author)

2000 Olympic Stats: 9.8 PPG, 1.9 RPG, 1.3 APG, 0.9 SPG, 1.4 BPG

Shortly after his retirement, Ray Allen went on a media tour of sorts to address rumors about his departure from Boston and seemingly promote his upcoming memoir “From The Outside: My Journey Through Life And The Game I Love”. The memoir and media appearances sparked a mini-controversy among other Boston teammates like Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. Things seem to be a-ok now as the three embraced and reunited at Kevin Garnett’s jersey retirement in Boston in 2022.

Aside from the book, Allen has been keeping busy in other ways as well. He and his wife Shannon founded a thriving restaurant chain called Grown in Miami where their family resides. The restaurant was inspired by Ray’s NBA diet, most of which was prepared by his wife. The business is thriving and looking to expand further than the Miami-Dade area. In 2021, Allen was named the basketball director and coach at Gulliver Prep in Miami. Allen’s children attend the school and he has been very involved with their program since their enrollment.

Alonzo Mourning (Philanthropist)

2000 Olympic Stats: 10.2 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 1.3 APG, 0.2 SPG, 0.2 BPG

Alonzo Mourning is one of the toughest big men to ever play in the NBA. As many know, Mourning’s career was derailed a bit when he was diagnosed with a rare kidney condition in 2003. Since his retirement in 2008, Mourning has done extensive work in his community in Miami as well as research for the very same disease that could have taken his life. Along with his wife Tracy, Mourning started the Mourning Family Foundation in 1997 while he was still playing basketball.

They have since built an incredible reputation in the Miami area for their hard work and the betterment of the community. The couple helped build the Overtown Youth Center in Miami as a place to keep the youth off the streets of the increasingly violent areas of Miami. As far as other things go for Mourning, he just seems to be enjoying retirement and if he isn’t working on his community, you could probably find him on one of the many beautiful local golf courses.

Jason Kidd (Coach)

2000 Olympic Stats: 6.0 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 4.4 APG, 1.1 SPG, 0.0 BPG

As one of the best to ever play the point guard position, Jason Kidd has done nothing but try to pass that wisdom on to the next generation since his retirement. In 2013, Kidd was named the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets to begin his coaching journey. He is just the 3rd person ever to be named a coach just one season after retiring. He did pretty well with the Nets becoming the first rookie coach to win a playoff series. In 2014, Kidd’s coaching rights would be traded to the Milwaukee Bucks.

Kidd is somewhat credited for helping develop Giannis Antetokounmpo into the player he is today, despite his poor record with the Bucks. Kidd would be fired midway through the 2018 season. In 2019, he accepted a job as an assistant with the Los Angeles Lakers. This is where Kidd’s coaching blossomed and matured into what it is today. Kidd won a championship on the sidelines with the Lakers in 2020. In 2021, Kidd accepted a job with the Dallas Mavericks to become their next head coach. Kidd’s first season was a tremendous success as he gained the trust and control of the locker room and led the team to the Western Conference Finals. It’s safe to say Kidd’s early coaching struggles are behind him, which is good news for Mavericks fans.

Kevin Garnett (Content Creator, Analyst)

2000 Olympic Stats: 10.8 PPG, 9.1 RPG, 2.1 APG, 1.1 SPG, 0.3 BPG

Kevin Garnett is still the same old fiery and passionate man that he was when he was on the basketball court, but at a slower pace. Garnett is never afraid to speak his mind whether talking about his playing days and peers or the direction of the league today. Garnett has made several appearances as a regular on some TNT shows and was even given a spot on “Area 21”. Other than that, he also has served as a consultant for both the Los Angeles Clippers and Milwaukee Bucks.

Garnett had his jersey retired by the Boston Celtics in 2022 and in true KG fashion, it was emotional and passionate. Garnett has also played a significant role in founding the company called “Content Cartel”. The company is based in Hollywood and its goal has been to educate, inform, and inspire people through their work. Garnett has done several projects with the company including a great documentary with former President of the United States, Barack Obama.

Vince Carter (Analyst)

2000 Olympic Stats: 14.8 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 1.4 APG, 1.0 SPG, 0.0 BPG

Everybody remembers Vince Carter in the 2000 Olympics. He slammed home the most iconic dunk of all time when he jumped over 7-footer Frederic Weis for a vicious poster slam. However, talking about where Vince Carter is now is a little awkward considering his farewell tour was just 2 years ago after the 2020 season.

Since his retirement, Vince seems to be enjoying life, occasionally doing interviews and podcasts honoring his 22-year career and the iconic moments he gave us throughout. He has dove into the sports media world as well. Carter joined ESPN in 2020 shortly after his retirement. He has appeared on such shows as NBA Countdown, College Game Day, The Jump as a regular, Get Up, First Take, and SportsCenter.
