United States President Donald Trump just announced plans to honor Kobe Bryant and others in the upcoming National Garden of American Heroes. Bryant was the only NBA player named by the President but it’s not exclusive to just athletes.
“Under the executive order I signed last month, this new beautiful outdoor statue park. It’s going to be a statue park, it’s going to be unbelievable. We’re picking the final sites now, it’s between various states that want it very badly,” said Trump in a press conference. “We’ll honor hundreds of our greatest Americans who ever lived, including countless black American icons. The garden will predominantly feature incredible women like Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, and Coretta Scott King. We’re gonna produce some of the most beautiful works of art in the form of a statue for men like Frederick Douglas, Booker T. Washington, Jackie Robinson, Martin Luther King Jr., Muhammed Ali, who’s not a bad athlete, and the late Kobe Bryant! People love Kobe Bryant.”
President Trump signed an executive order earlier this month for plans to build the “National Garden of American Heroes.” The project is designed to symbolize American pride and achievement by honoring some of the country’s greatest icons.
Kobe Bryant may not have been the most important American but his impact on the basketball world (and sports as a whole) cannot be undersold. Besides being a ridiculously talented and successful athlete (5x champion, 1x MVP, 18x All-Star), Kobe had a relentless approach to the game that inspired countless fans around the world.
Kobe’s “mamba mentality” is still used today as a source of inspiration and many athletes continue to follow Bryant’s example of leadership and competitiveness to succeed in their careers. With averages of 25.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game over 20 seasons, Bryant’s story is one of hard work, perseverance, and amazing success.
Sadly, the Lakers legend passed away after a tragic helicopter accident in Southern California back in 2020. He and his daughter, Gianna, were among nine victims of the fatal crash and the entire sports world mourned the event.
In the years that followed his death, Kobe has been honored many times over in the form of statements, stories, and statues from his former friends, teammates, and coaches. While he’s no longer around anymore, Bryant’s legacy lives on in the hearts of the fans and now it gets to live on at the National Hero Garden.
We don’t know what the Kobe statue will look like or how long it will take to build but hopefully, it turns out better than the last one, which got slammed by fans and critics online.
As for why Kobe Bryant was the only NBA player mentioned for the park, nobody knows for sure. He’s a fan favorite, for sure, but some believe that Trump purposefully kept off athletes like LeBron James and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who have been critical of his performance in the White House.
Whatever the reasons, Kobe Bryant is going to get honored again and this time it’s going to be on the national stage alongside fellow American icons. Very few players have the legacy that Kobe does and judging by the public’s reaction to his appearance in the National Garden of American Heroes, his life and career are still widely celebrated today.
