Draymond Green Reveals He Considered Joining Celtics Before Re-Signing With Warriors

3 Min Read

It would be very odd to see Draymond Green in another uniform that isn’t the Golden State Warriors. The big man has created incredible memories at the Bay, becoming one of the most important players for the Dubs alongside Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.

His impact on the team is undeniable, but at some point, the player was close to joining another NBA franchise. This year marks the 10th of Draymond with the Warriors. However, he could have taken a different route.

After the 2018/19 NBA season, Green wanted to stay with the Warriors, but the Dubs didn’t make a compelling offer at first. This situation led the player to look for options, and the Boston Celtics tried to lure him away from the Bay. Talking with JJ Redick on his ‘The Old Man and the Three,’ Green explained:

“So I had heard the Pistons were going to offer me a sizeable contract. And I also talked to Danny Ainge and the Celtics. When free agency started, so we kind of had that small little window of the Warriors. Like ‘ah, the highest we were going is 70’,” Draymond Green said.

“And I’m like ‘well I’m gonna go talk to someone else’. Then it reported that Draymond and Warriors had cut talks off and right after that, I talked to Danny Ainge and the Warriors call right back like ‘all right, that’s it, good’.”

When they heard about Green entertaining other offers, the Warriors came into their sense and re-signed the former Defensive Player of the Year on a four-year, $100 million deal. Green is the defensive leader of the team, but he’s also the one who orchestrates the team’s offense and makes everything work on Steve Kerr’s squad.

Sadly for the Dubs, Draymond is currently sidelined with a back injury. Klay Thompson returned to action after a two-year absence and Stephen Curry is finally recovering his form. Once Green comes back, it’ll be hard times for the rest of the league. Golden State is back in contention and having their trio together is very important for their championship aspirations.
