Anthony Davis gets why LeBron James was blunt after the Los Angeles Lakers 112-98 loss to the Miami Heat earlier this week.
The veteran took a veiled shot at the front office, all the while stressing that he had no intentions of playing “meaningless basketball.” And on his part, Davis defended his teammate, even as James’ scathing criticism earned the ire of some segments of fans.
Per ESPN, the big man, who is currently sidelined indefinitely following a stress fracture to his right foot, shed light on the matter.
“I mean he’s not getting any younger. Of course, it would only make sense that he would want to compete for championships in the X amount of years he has left in him. So I took nothing from it. I took it for exactly what it was, what he said, and I feel like it’s a true statement.”
James backed up his criticism by putting on a show against the Atlanta Hawks, exploding for 47 points, 10 rebounds, and 9 assists — a timely reminder that the front office could do their part by fitting him with the right pieces to help go the distance.
Anthony Davis’ Injury Update Is Promising
Davis was phenomenal for the Lakers averaging 27.4 points, 12.1 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks this season before he ran into an injury against the Denver Nuggets earlier this month.
He missed the next few games and is set to sit out for a few more, but he had promising news. Speaking to the media, he said his recovery was on track, and he was keen to get back to playing.
“It’s really just about pain. The pain is still there, I still feel it a little bit, not as much as much as I did before. More like a two (out of 10), trending down to one.”
This comes as great news for LA after growing concerns that he would need surgery. It appears that his foot has more or less healed well enough for him to start and ramp up on-court work and take the floor at some stage in January.
