Anthony Davis has taken the mantle of the on-court leader for the Lakers since LeBron James was ruled out with an injury. He’s handled the responsibility exceedingly well.

After leading the Lakers to a strong win over the Memphis Grizzlies that made the team the 9th seed in the West, Davis emphasized the team is still pushing up the standings.

The Lakers set out to be one of the top-six seeds in the West and they’re still a few games off that goal. There’s a tie between the 5th and 6th seed right now, as the Dallas Mavericks and Golden State Warriors sit just 2 games ahead of the Lakers in their guaranteed playoff seeds.

Can The Lakers Bypass The Play-In Without LeBron James?

The Lakers are going to have to be especially greedy if they want to make their push up the table without LeBron James. James has missed the last 4 games for the Lakers due to a foot injury and is expected to be sidelined for at least another two weeks. The Lakers have to continue their winning ways and hope nobody else gets a major injury. They were lucky to leave last night with Davis healthy.

D’Angelo Russell returning soon would be a massive boost for the Lakers, as Dennis Schroder has had to over-extend himself to be a half-court playmaker for the guard-less Lakers. Given the inconsistent form of the teams ahead of them and the Lakers being 7-3 in their last 10, the team will feel good about their chances of getting a better seed.

The Lakers need to be greedy in order to motivate themselves to earn the 5th or 6th seed in the West, especially with James not returning till the tail-end of the regular season. It’s surprisingly likely as the Lakers have been rolling ever since they traded Russell Westbrook away.
