The shooting guard position has seen some of the greatest players in NBA history take up the mantle. A complex role, the shooting guard on a team is expected to be a solid shooter, offensive player, and a great defender. It is a hard position to play, and not many are able to excel.

Current Lakers shooting guard Austin Reaves recently named his top five shooting guards of all time. During an interview for the ‘All The Smoke’ podcast, Reaves named Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, James Harden, and Brandon Roy as his five greatest shooting guards of all time.

“My top five? MJ, Kobe… This is tough. D-Wade. James Harden is a two (guard) or is he a one? James Harden, just because of his skill. I actually really like Brandon Roy.”

(From 39:03 mark)

Reaves mentioning Brandon Roy was a surprise, as not many name him in their top five lists. In fact, Gilbert Arenas recently called out Reaves for not including Allen Iverson in his list, and including Roy over AI. But Reaves did mention that this was his personal list rather than an objective one.

Can Austin Reaves Become One Of The Best Shooting Guards In The League?

Austin Reaves has quickly established himself as one of the best young shooting guards in the league. While Reaves was not a drafted player, he has been one of the best young Lakers signings in recent history. His performances in the 2023 NBA playoffs were sensational.

During the playoffs, Austin Reaves averaged 16.9 points, 4.6 assists, and 4.4 rebounds over 16 games in the playoffs. Many have argued that Reaves was the third-best player for the Lakers after LeBron James and Anthony Davis during the playoffs.

The Lakers managed to re-sign Reaves in free agency, as he was bound to earn a big contract. Reaves did mention that he considered signing with the Spurs and the Rockets before ultimately choosing to re-sign with the Los Angeles Lakers. Fans will be thrilled with his decision.
