Chandler Parsons’ tenure with the Memphis Grizzlies is one of the worst moves by any NBA franchise. The forward was expected to do incredible things with the Grizz, but things simply didn’t work out, and his body stopped working before he was traded and left the NBA for good.
This was a great move by Parsons, who signed a $95 million contract with the Grizzlies, and then his development stopped, looking nothing like the guy he was on the Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks, respectively.
Now he has become an analyst who doesn’t hesitate to joke about things happening in the NBA, troll his former boss with his contract, and even take a little shot at one player trying to sell his talents in free agency.
Chandler Parsons Breaks Down His Biggest Play In The NBA
Parsons talked about his incredible contract and the way the Memphis Grizzlies gave him nearly $100 million in 2016 after not taking care of things the way other teams did. Talking with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson on All The Smoke, Parsons explained (31:20):
I was all in on Portland. I was like, we can cancel the Memphis offer, I’m going to Portland and play with Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum… this is great. Then JB Bickerstaff and David Fizdale, who are my family, they had just gotten the head coaching job at Memphis and I said let’s just take the meeting. And also they had Marc Gasol, Mike Conley, Zach Randolph… They had a squad too. So we’re at Dan Fegan’s house in the Memphis meeting. And I see Fegan is getting red and kind of getting weird. Then five minutes later he says, ‘hey, let’s take a break.’ We’ll meet back up in five, and he’s like, ‘CP come here.’ I go to his room with him and he’s like, ‘you’re going to Memphis.’ And I’m like, what do you mean? And he goes, ‘Portland is going to give you a physical and because of Greg Oden and Brandon Roy’s injury history, you might not pass. Trust me, if you do that and they red-flag you you’re taking a minimum deal and you’re smoked out that 95 million’. I was on Zillow looking at houses in Portland! Then I go back in there and I… Oscar performance [laughs] I go back in there… ‘Listen guys, I’ve never been more sure about something in my life. Grit and grind till the day I die [laughs]. I’m in!’ That was just another Dan Fegan crazy story. That was nuts. This man did it again.”
Chandler Parsons pulled off a big move with that signing. He was ready to take his money and see how everything else played out, and the Grizzlies were the perfect victim for him. Now, he’s enjoying life after suffering a serious accident that killed any hope that he’d play in the NBA again, and his story always brings a lot of attention.
Fortunately, now the Grizzlies have a competitive team led by Ja Morant, who’s trying to do what Parsons and his generation couldn’t.
