The Los Angeles Clippers will hope to finally find the perfect way to employ Russell Westbrook in a championship-winning squad this season. They signed Westbrook off the buyout market to give them a genuine point guard on a franchise that wants to win a title as soon as possible.

Given the Clippers’ aggressively expensive roster and talent-rich bench, Westbrook may finally be in a place where he can focus on what he’s good at instead of having to carry a heavy offensive load.

Charles Barkley believes this is Westbrook’s best chance to become an NBA Champion, given the hunger and tenacity he’s going to bring to a team that could do with his skill set and personality. He also spoke about the anger Russ will play with given how the Lakers treated him as the scapegoat for incompetent roster building.

“This is his best chance to win a championship. You know I love Russ. Having Tyronn Lue on the sidelines is really important. Having Kawhi and Paul George as teammates, he don’t have to be the guy, he’s going to be coming off the bench. But the anger he has toward the Lakers because they really screwed him in LA. They blamed him for everything. The team they had last year and the beginning of the season was trash. It was flat-out trash. They blamed Russ for everything. He’s going to be angry and it’s going to be fun to watch. This is his best chance to win a championship.”

Everyone is going to be watching the Clippers avidly after this move just to see if Russ evolves as a player and buys into whatever role Tyronn Lue dreams up for him. Given the success the Lakers have had since moving off Westbrook, he has some motivation to fuel himself.

Will We See A New Russell Westbrook?

is not the same player he was in 2019 when he and Paul George were last teammates. Westbrook is a buyout minimum contract on the Clippers so the expectations won’t be as pervasive as they were in OKC back then or even on the Lakers just two weeks ago.

He seems genuinely happy for this new adventure on a contending team that has enough perimeter shooting weapons to hide that flaw in his game. Russ’s half-court creation and table setting will be extremely valuable here. There are plenty of questions about his willingness to do the dirty work, so it will be fascinating to see how this team looks on the court when Russ makes his Clippers debut.
