NBA legend Charles Barkley has never been shy about speaking his mind, and this year has been no exception. Even now, amid a wild NBA season with so many high-profile names, Chuck doesn’t hold back on his honest opinion.

So when Barkley showed up to speak on the ‘Bird and Tauraiusi Show,’ fans were prepared for some hot takes — and Chuck delivered.

“I don’t understand why these companies haven’t been working with y’all for years and years,” Barkley said, arguing that women athletes should get more rep. “You ladies could be on commercials everywhere. We put bad NBA players in commercials before some of y’all superstars.”

Barkley didn’t call out any players by name (which would have caused a massive uproar), but it’s hard to tell which player he could be talking about.

Nonetheless, it’s clear that Barkley just wants to be supportive of women athletes and he wants to make it clear that some of these women deserve just as much attention and praise as the man.

“The WNBA is a great product but ya’ll should not have to do to these crap countries to make money. These American companies should put y’all in commercials, they should partner with y’all, even if they don’t put you in commercials, they should partner with y’all and go back and help improve some of these communities. So I’m asking these American companies to step up so y’all don’t have to play in other countries.”

NBA Athletes Are Doing Their Part To Uplift WNBA

While Barkley took an especially aggressive approach, the idea to support and talk-up WNBA athletes is nothing new in the NBA world. Over the years, many stars have given their take on the subject and even superstars like LeBron James and Kobe Bryant have defended WNBA players from unfair criticism.

“I think there are a couple of players who could play in the NBA right now, honestly,” Kobe Bryant once said without hesitation. “There’s a lot of players that have a lot of skill that could do it.”

It’s no secret that the WNBA is not nearly as profitable as other pro-sports leagues, but one could argue it’s only because they aren’t getting a real chance to shine.

Hopefully, the scene changes, and the WNBA will no longer have to worry about properly compensating its players. Until then, guys like Barkley and others will continue to speak out on their behalf.
