- Mark Turmell was unhappy about the Chicago Bulls passing up the Detroit Pistons
- The creator of NBA Jam revealed that he inserted the glitch into the game to “make a difference”
- An actual code prevents the Bulls from beating the Pistons
Before NBA 2K, there were a lot of other prominent NBA-related games. One of those games was NBA Jam, which was designed for arcades and featured games with a 2-on-2 format. The game was released by the company Midway in 1993.
NBA Jam was a fun game with a huge following, but there is an insane fact that not many know about. When the Chicago Bulls play the Detroit Pistons, the game is rigged, so that if the Bulls shoot to win or tie within the last five seconds, it automatically misses. Previously, we saw the creator of NBA Jam Mark Turmell explain why this was included in the game, noting that he was “unhappy with what happened” to the Pistons.
“I was unhappy with what had happened to the Pistons, that was my only way to make a difference. So if the Bulls take a shot to win or tie the score in the last 5s, I threw up a brick. There’s an actual code in there that prevents them from winning.”
Michael Jordan notably beat the Detroit Pistons on the Chicago Bulls’ way to the championship in 1991. However, the Pistons did beat the Bulls in the playoffs in 1988, 1989 and 1990. There’s no doubt that the two franchises had a huge rivalry at the time, and it is easy to see whose side Mark Turmell was on.
Isiah Thomas Once Clapped Back At Michael Jordan For Saying The Detroit Pistons Are Undeserving Champions
Though the Detroit Pistons can’t necessarily be considered a dynasty, they were a very competitive team in the late 1980s and early 1990s. However, there are definitely some that frown upon the way they play, and Michael Jordan once called them “undeserving” champions. Isiah Thomas clapped back at this characterization, noting that the team was consistently competitive and only lost to some of the greatest teams in NBA history.
“87,88, we all up in the mix. We lose what our people arguably say the greatest basketball teams ever. We got those teams beat and then we knocked them off. Then this dude sit up there and say, y’all undeserving, y’all bad for the game.”
At the end of the day, a championship is a championship. There are no undeserving champions in the league, and the Detroit Pistons will forever be remembered as one of the best defensive teams of their era.
