The offseason of 2023 will often be remembered for the Damian Lillard trade saga after the superstar point guard requested a trade after 12 seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers.

Lillard seems set on leaving the Blazers for the Miami Heat, provided the team ends up accepting their trade package. It seems Lillard doesn’t think too highly of the current ownership group in charge of the franchise, liking a tweet requesting the current owners sell the franchise to Nike founder Phil Knight.

Knight has previously been interested in purchasing the Blazers. The current owners are the Paul Allen Trust, formally operated by his daughter, Jody. Knight allegedly had prepared a $2 billion offer for the franchise a couple of years ago, but with the price the Charlotte Hornets recently sold for, $2 billion doesn’t seem nearly enough anymore.

Damian Lillard Upset With Ownership

This is the first time that Lillard has openly expressed any dissatisfaction with the ownership group. Knight has been a harbinger of change in Portland, especially in the sporting community, so many people in touch with the community advocate for Knight to be the owner. The current franchise star liking a tweet with the same sentiment doesn’t reflect well on Jody Allen and the current owners.

It’s unlikely that the team will be sold any time soon, but Dame may just be gone. The Blazers have indicated they are willing to drag this battle out if needed, so we aren’t going to find a happy ending anytime soon.

Lillard has averaged 25.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 6.7 assists over his time on the Blazers and his 32.2 points average last season is the highest in Blazers’ history. Unfortunately, it seems this relationship will end in a sour manner, especially if he holds out until he gets traded to the Heat.
