Damian Lillard has officially written his name into the history books of the Portland Trail Blazers by becoming the greatest scorer the franchise has ever seen, surpassing former cornerstone Clyde Drexler. Drexler scored 18,040 points in his career, with Lillard surpassing that after coming into this game trailing Clyde by just 20.

Lillard broke the record at the free-throw line, making 2 and reaching 22 points on the night. The Blazers are facing the Oklahoma City Thunder in Oklahoma, so Lillard couldn’t break the record in front of an adoring Blazers fanbase with whom he has stuck his entire career, epitomizing loyalty.

If Lillard is to retire on the Blazers and keep the quest for a championship alive until his last game in the league, he might just be remembered as the greatest Trail Blazer of all time, even though surpassing Drexler is going to be hard.

What Does Damian Lillard Need To Do To Be The Trail Blazers GOAT?

Considering Clyde Drexler never brought a championship to the city of Portland, Lillard could feasibly become the greatest player in franchise history without winning a ring. Lillard’s loyalty is something that is incredibly rare and shows a commitment to win in his city that we haven’t seen from others in recent history.

If loyalty isn’t enough, Lillard needs to spend the next few years of his career giving it all for a championship. He’s done it so far and taken the franchise as far as the Conference Finals. If the ‘second-greatest shooter of all-time‘ can put it together and even match Drexler by leading the team to the NBA Finals, he’ll secure his legacy as a  Trail Blazer.
