Coaching the Los Angeles Lakers is a dream come true for most head coaches. But not everyone can withstand the bright lights of L.A., alongside managing the egos of superstars.

Darvin Ham got a taste of that in the 2022-23 season when he began his head coaching journey. In a recent interview with SiriusXM NBA Radio, Ham explained how he deals with the challenges of coaching LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

“I think you have to come in and embrace it,” Ham said. “You can’t be scared of it. You can’t shy away from it. You just have to embrace and everything that comes with it. Like I said, I’d have to work, I have got nothing easy during my whole time, 26 years, 27 years, this August of me being in the NBA.”

Ham added: “Bron and AD, those guys allowed themselves to be coached and buy into what we were doing, and once it clicked for them, it was easy for everyone else. I can’t thank those two guys enough, man, for supporting us and supporting our vision. Showing up focused.”

LeBron James and Anthony Davis are two of the best players in the NBA right now. Ham got them to listen to his coaching strategy, and things became easier for him.

Even former Lakers head coach Frank Vogel learned a lot about managing the egos of superstars after coaching LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Vogel will use that learning with the Phoenix Suns.

Darvin Ham Took A Shot At Michael Malone

The Los Angeles Lakers were swept by Michael Malone’s Denver Nuggets in the 2023 Western Conference Finals. Since then, Malone has taken several shots at the Lakers.

A Nuggets broadcaster called Malone the Lakers’ daddy. Ham apparently took note of it and clapped back at those comments.

“Oh, wow. You’re gonna bring up Money Mike, man? The Lakers’ daddy? That’s what they call him now? The Lakers’ daddy?” Ham remarked. “God bless his soul. This s**t ain’t over. God bless his soul.”

Ham led the Lakers to the Western Conference Finals in his rookie season as the head coach of the team. It will be exciting to see what can Ham do with the team in the 2023-24 season. The 49-year-old is certainly waiting to take revenge vs. Malone.
