Dennis Schroder said European basketball was IQ-driven as compared to the entertainment-driven style used in the USA during the Paris Olympics, prompting Kevin Durant to mock this point on social media after Team USA won Gold. Schroder responded to Durant putting his comments on blast on social media, calling the Gold medallist mentally weak for responding to a player like Schroder.

“They won and then Kevin Durant tweeted, ‘High IQ and entertaining.’ For me, that’s just being weak. That type of a star and you have to say something to a person like me who didn’t even mean it to be negative, it’s just what I see from both sides. I didn’t appreciate it.”

“I don’t care but at the end of the day, that tweet he posted was because of me. For me, it was no negative stuff, I respect all those guys, all GOATs. But him saying that to me just shows me how weak he is as a person. It is what it is. Not everyone is strong or in a good place.

The initial comment from Schroder that sparked Durant’s passive-aggressive social media post highlighted the difference between American and European basketball, where he correctly pointed out that the NBA game is geared towards entertainment instead of high-IQ basketball.

“European basketball is no entertainment, it’s straight IQ basketball, straight coaching. Really, really high-IQ guys who know how to play the game. Serbia, Greece, Spain, France, Germany, so many teams out there who know how to play, is athletic, and I think there’s a lot of people from Europe in the NBA who make some noise.”

Schroder had the moral high ground in the argument as European basketball is considered to be a more focused style with it being eight minutes shorter and not featuring half the interruptions an NBA game has, especially in terms of advertisements and constant on-court entertainment.

Durant shared this on social media after what Schroder said, which has now led to Schroder’s response.

Schroder tried playing the ‘weak’ comment off by saying a player of Durant’s caliber shouldn’t be bothered with what players like him say, but it was clear that Schroder knew he was making flat-out negative comments about one of the NBA’s biggest stars.

Naturally, Schroder isn’t worried about what others say about his response but it’ll add an extra layer of intrigue to a matchup between the Nets and Durant, as Schroder is expected to be the starting point guard for the Nets next season.

It’s anyway a bitter homecoming matchup for Durant after his failed stint on the franchise, but Schroder will be circling this matchup in a season where he’s not expected to play competitive basketball.

Schroder averaged 17.3 points at the Paris Olympics in Germany’s fourth-place finish while Durant averaged 13.8 points as Team USA won the Gold medal.
