Dirk Nowitzki is the greatest player in the history of the Dallas Mavericks organization. Nowitzki stayed with the franchise for his entire career, through all the ups and downs. And in 2011, Nowitzki won the franchise their one and only NBA championship, defeating LeBron James and the Miami Heat in one of the biggest upsets in NBA Finals history.

Last night, the Mavericks held a jersey retirement for Dirk Nowitzki, putting up his #41 jersey in the rafters. It was a special night where the franchise honored a legend. During Nowitzki’s speech, he did take a moment to thank his family, and in particular, roast his father-in-law.

While giving his speech, Dirk Nowitzki mentioned that his father-in-law flew in for the jersey retirement ceremony in Dallas all the way from Sweden. He thanked him for traveling all the way across the world for this special night but mentioned that the thing he appreciated about him the most is his daughter, Dirk’s wife.

"My father in law is here today. Thanks for coming all the way from Sweden, but what I appreciate most about you is your daughter."

“My father-in-law is here today. Thanks for coming all the way from Sweden, but what I appreciate most about you is your daughter.”

Nowitzki was clearly having fun on a night that must have been very emotional. Dirk was not the only one with jokes during the ceremony. His former Mavs teammate and current head coach Jason Kidd joked that Nowitzki would be given a 10-day contract by the team if he wished to return right now.

Dirk took the opportunity to thank Mark Cuban and the Mavericks fanbase as well, a group of supporters who have always stood by him at every stage of his career. Clearly, there is a lot of love between Dirk and the Mavericks’ fanbase for all that he did for the franchise during his legendary career in the league.
