In an appearance on the ‘Club 520 Podcast,’ 4x NBA champion Draymond Green revealed that the Warriors had a trade in place to add a win-now player to the roster. He also revealed that he told his team not to do it for the sake of preserving their future.

“[The Warriors] were about to make a trade last week and I told them straight up like that trade helps me,” said Green. “It’ll help me right now in my career but I’ve always spoken to y’all for what’s best for the organization and I won’t stop now. That’s a bad trade, don’t do that trade. I disagree with it, although it going to help me right now.”

To improve as a team often requires sacrificing the future. For franchises across the league and professional sports, it can often be difficult to determine when is the right moment to trade in your chips and go all-in on a championship pursuit. Draymond seems to understand this reality and has even given his own GM advice on a recent trade offer.

The Warriors, who lost 9n the play-in last season, made several moves this summer after missing the 2024 playoffs. Their first order of business was finding a replacement for Klay Thompson, and Buddy Hield should be able to fill that role adequately enough. They also acquired Kyle Anderson from the Timberwolves as part of a sign-and-trade agreement. Apparently, they had another trad in place last week before one of their treasured veterans advised against it.

Draymond, 34, is a 12-year NBA veteran and 4x NBA champion. After helping establish the Warriors as a dynasty in the 2010s, his legacy has been celebrated within the Warriors franchise, and his power there runs deep. So when Draymond told his team not to go through with the deal, they heeded his warning and shut down trade talks. Dray did not elaborate on the details of the deal but whatever he said was enough to convince them not to go through with it.

Despite being addicted to success and an unsatiable desire to win, Draymond is always going to go for what’s best for the team. In his mind, giving up the future (picks or a young player like Jonathan Kuminga) isn’t worth adding some depth to help them win now.

With Klay gone and the Warriors struggling to stay relevant, it appears that Green sees the writing on the wall. The glory days are over now and while the Dubs can still be competitive in the West, they’ll never be as dominant as they used to be.

With Green, Steph, and Andrew Wiggins, the Warriors hope they can still keep up against the elites but there’s no need for them to give up their future. If the Warriors do this right and are protective of their draft capital, it could pay off in a major way for them down the road when it’s time to rebuild after Stephen Curry.

Next season could be the last time we see the Warriors in their current form and with his contract set to expire in 2027, Draymond himself could soon be facing an uncertain future. What/s imperative for the Warriors as a franchise is that they ride this out for as long as they can and put the focus on development so that their next generation of core stars can take the mantle from this current championship group.
