In the United States of America, the month of February is dedicated to celebrating and appreciating black culture, history, and significance. For most Americans, it’s a time to honor diversity and the countless people who fought to change the world.
But if you ask Warriors star Draymond Green, the US should abolish the tradition forever. Speaking in a post-game press conference, the 4x champion explained why he’s tired of Black History Month.
“Black History Month, at some point can we get rid of it?” Draymond said, per Complex sports. “Like, at some point? Why we gotta keep getting the shortest month to celebrate our history? You got governors wanting to take our history out of schools, and I’m not gonna be the fool to go, ‘Yeah we can celebrate for 28 days.’ So at some point, I would like to get rid of it.”
It’s obviously a controversial statement from Dray, but don’t think he wants to stop people from learning or celebrating black history. Instead of being restricted to a month, Green wants it to be more of a year-round thing.
“We’re making all these changes in the world— at some point it’s time to get rid of Black History Month,” he said. “Not get rid of Black history, like they’re trying to do, but Black History Month? Nah. Teach my history from January 1st to December 31st and then do it over again, and then again. That’s what I’d like to see.”
Draymond’s point is simple: why give Black history a month when it can be shared and celebrated all year long? That’s the type of thing Draymond really wants to see, no matter how unlikely it is to actually happen.
Can Draymond Help The Warriors Turn Their Season Around?
The biggest question for Dray is whether or not he’ll be playing into late spring this year. Amid major struggles for Golden State this season, they are in serious jeopardy of missing the playoffs just months after winning the title.
So while Green may feel strongly about Black history and getting rid of its dedicated month, his focus right now should be on helping Golden State stay alive until Stephen Curry hits the court again.
