Kyrie Irving is a bit of an enigma. It is hard to predict what he will do next, both on the court and off it. His electrifying handles and incredible feel for the game on the court make him impossible for defenders to read, and some of the things he does outside of basketball can be equally bamboozling for those watching.

There has been a lot of drama surrounding Irving since the end of the season. He has been in the news consistently. At first, it was his pursuit of a long-term max contract, then followed by endless reports about a potential trade to the Los Angeles Lakers. And while all of these things can put people off of Kyrie, basketball fans are reminded of why he is worth the trouble every time he has the ball in his hands.

Irving was slated to play in the middle of this maelstrom when it was announced that he would participate in the Drew League game on Saturday. The game was set to feature LeBron James and DeMar DeRozan as well, both of whom duly turned up. But Irving was nowhere to be seen and Drew league Commissioner Dino Smiley addressed his absence after the game.

“I don’t know. They were pretty sure he was coming. But you know how Kyrie is. I guess he changed his mind in the middle of it.”

Smiley mentioned that there was a possibility that Irving would play a game on Sunday instead, and it remains to be seen if that will happen. Kyrie, meanwhile, chose to help out at Lakers coach Phil Handy’s basketball camp, further fuelling speculation about him moving to Los Angeles. While Irving often gets the short end of the stick in the media for his actions, it’s evident that things like this also don’t help improve the narrative surrounding him.
